New movie The Lost Bus is streaming today for free on Apple TV+, starring Matthew McConaughey. The film is based on the book ‘Paradise’, which tells the true story of how school bus driver Kevin McKay saved 22 school children from the deadliest California wildfire in a century.
McConaughey plays McKay, with much of the film following the bus journey in its escape through the raging fires. America Ferrera also stars as Mary Ludwig, the school teacher.
Set in 2018, this movie tells the kind of story you wouldn’t believe actually happened. As the fire begins to spiral out of control, McKay’s first instincts is to find his family. But when he hears about the trapped class of kids, he makes the courageous decision to turn his bus around and try to save them.
The movie is directed by Paul Greengrass, who is known for his shaky cam portrayals of real historical events. Critical reception to The Lost Bus has been overwhelmingly positive, with particular praise for the rendition of the fire visual effects, especially as the bus is engulfed by the flames of the fire. It currently sits at 85% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes.
