We can never repeat it enough: never click on the links in commercial emails or your spam before you have been able to analyze them. Recently, customers of the Lidl supermarket brand were fooled by a well-crafted scam. A new phishing campaign is affecting a large part of the population, looking for gifts during this post-holiday sales period.
Lidl implemented a loyalty system several years ago. Scammers rely on this specificity to lure victims. The first step is to make them believe that their diligence will soon be rewarded with an exceptional gift. This is a vacuum cleaner branded SilverCrest, Lidl’s proprietary brand for household appliances.
However, this is all just an excuse to collect your data and defraud you. In fact, the site SafeOnWeb alerts store customers that Lidl has never used this type of commercial practice and that the email is completely fraudulent. It sets up a link, in the form of a button, which recipients must click to “claim the gift”. The so-called free service turns into a real trap for victims.
Stay on guard when you receive emails and messages
To counter this phishing campaign, which must have already landed in your spam folder, we advise you to avoid opening any email with an overly enthusiastic subject. If you have already done so, you can easily spot a fraudulent link by right-clicking on it, then copying, and finally pasting into your browser. Don’t press enter and instead parse the link. If it does not contain the name of the official site (lidl.fr) it is because it is a false link. If in the worst case scenario you have already clicked, do not enter your personal data. Contact your bank for any questions or complaints.
And if you are really interested in the SilverCrest vacuum cleaner, you can always obtain one via the Lidl website, which offers a range of different types at competitive prices. It’s the sales so let yourself be tempted!
