Netflix is the streaming service with the most original movies and shows, but to make room for the new stuff, some of the movies and shows that you’ve always wanted to see—and have had on your to-watch list for months—must be put out to pasture.
That’s because Netflix doesn’t own everything it streams. Its contracts with networks, production companies, and movie studios mean its programming constantly shifts. So, each month, we bring you up to date with a list of what’s going to disappear, and highlight our top choices for what you should watch in January before they’re gone. This month sees a ton of movies leave on the first day of the year, but we’re also losing some extremely binge-worthy TV series.
Mr. Robot: Seasons 1-4 (Jan. 3)
It’s funny how the world of uncontrolled cybercrime predicted in Mr. Robot when it premiered in 2015 seems almost quaint, as AI-powered scammers now impersonate celebrities and family members, data breaches happen on a daily basis, and monopolistic tech companies warp the social fabric to their sick desires. The USA series still holds up, with Rami Malek making his career as introverted hacker Elliot, who joins a vigilante hacking gang and opens a can of worms that threatens to destroy the world as we know it.
Donnie Darko (Jan. 18)
It’s hard to name a director who came out of the gates as fully formed as Richard Kelly. Donnie Darko remains a classic debut, with great performances, clever concepts, and lots of jumping-off points for fan theories. Jake Gyllenhaal had his breakout role as Donnie, a disaffected suburban teenager who escapes death when a jet engine crashes into his bedroom. Unfortunately, there are worse things than death, like a creepy giant rabbit and the end of the world.
Prison Break (Jan. 29)
There’s something very nostalgic about post-24 early 00’s TV dramas, as they love to ratchet up the ridiculous plot twists in a way we don’t get enough of anymore. Prison Break was a Fox favorite that started out pretty simple: a structural engineer gets himself thrown into a prison he designed in order to bust out his falsely convicted brother. But over five seasons, things ramped up to become increasingly ludicrous, with great supporting characters and double-crosses. A perfect binge-watching show.
