In a company blog post, Waymo said: “Last Saturday, when a widespread PG&E outage knocked out power to nearly a third of San Francisco, our service was put to the test. Now that power has been restored, we wanted to share an account of our activities during the outage and how we are evolving to better serve the city. The extent of the outage and the large number of disabled traffic signals were the primary causes of the citywide gridlock. When signals went out in major corridors, the resulting congestion required law enforcement to manually manage The situation was so dire that the San Francisco Department of Emergency Management advised residents to stay home, underscoring the extraordinary nature of the weekend’s disruptions. Navigating an event of this magnitude posed a unique challenge for the autonomous technology. Although the Waymo Driver is designed to handle dark traffic lights as four-way stops, it may occasionally request a confirmation check to ensure it is making the safest choice. We have these confirmation protocols from a abundance of caution during our early implementation, and we are now refining them to match our current scale. This strategy has been effective during smaller outages. We are now rolling out fleet-wide updates that provide the driver with a specific outage context, allowing them to navigate more decisively.
