Season 2 of Fallout it’s already finished. After eight weeks of broadcast, it is time for the Amazon series to take a little rest. Episode 8, available on Prime Video since February 4, had the chance to put answers where there were previously questions, but also to open up possible new intrigues for season 3 to come.

And in this sense, this last chapter is not stingy with information. Many things happen there, and although most of them are understandable quite easily, other gray points remain vague enough for us to wonder what they could possibly mean for the rest of the adventure. If you haven’t understood everything about episode 8, here’s what you need to understand and remember.

Who really controls the Vaults and the Wastelands?

A few weeks ago, we were already asking ourselves the question of the identity of the big bad of the series Fallout. It appeared as early as episode 5 that Robert House was probably not the power magnate that we imagined, and that a “other player” controlled the game. Episode 8 finally answers this question… with an even broader question.

The finale of season 2 of Fallout is a pivotal episode in which the series shifts towards something much more political. The government’s involvement in the end of the world but also in the control of shelters and the population in general has already been mentioned several times. Here, we gradually understand that a broader plan could have existed, with different “phases”. War would then be a tool and not an end.

The fact that Diane Welch, the pre-war MP, found her head pricked by electrodes of all kinds, is a sign that the government, or at least part of it, has an extremely important role in history. This ties into the subject of the Enclave (read our article here), an omnipresent but discreet organization to which certain key figures are affiliated. Hank, Stephanie and other key figures appear to be enforcers of a larger and more powerful enemy, whose identity we do not yet know.

However, we know that “phase 2” has been triggered and that it could have a huge impact on the Wastelands as well as the shelters.

Hank’s final speech

Hank’s final monologue is probably the most important element of the episode. When he talks about individuals infiltrated into the Wasteland, equipped with advanced implants and ready to sacrifice themselves “for the common good“, the series opens a new dimension, something to be explored in the next season.

This means that the control could already have been in place for a long time, perhaps even well before the shelters were built. Some people we know might not be who they say they are. Narratively, Hank clearly moves beyond the status of an “active” main character. The voluntary erasure of one’s memory acts as a sacrifice – or as a narrative lock for the future.

Lucy’s quest should now focus on her father’s last words. Finding these implanted individuals could become the main arc of the sequel. But the question remains open: will they cross paths with the Ghoul again?

Colorado, the next piece of the puzzle

The series is clearly preparing a narrative shift to Colorado. Howard Cooper/the Ghoul goes looking for his family. She is apparently alive, escaped (alone or with help, we don’t know yet) from the management shelter in Las Vegas, and Barbara left a postcard from Colorado for her husband to find.

Lore-wise, Colorado already exists in the universe Fallout. In Fallout Tacticswe discover Vault 0, a secret base where the brains of the greatest scientists have been uploaded into an AI called the Calculator, and which ends up becoming genocidal. If the series is inspired by it, it could herald a super important very technological arc, or even a major new threat to humans. We could also discover more about the Enclave because there is little doubt about its involvement in this type of project.

An end that mostly resembles a beginning

This finale closes almost nothing. On the contrary, it expands the universe. The series lays the foundations for a potentially much more political and disturbing season 3 which will once again separate our characters. Cooper is heading to Colorado, but where will Lucy and Maximus go to do their research? And what will happen to Norm who is also close to his father’s secret?
