Zelda, Pokémon, Diablo, Blizzard… and now Razer, 2026 is truly the year of milestone anniversaries. The brand is celebrating its 20th anniversary with one of the craziest collector’s editions, the Boomslang 20th Anniversary Edition.

To understand why this mouse exists, we have to go back to 1999. Back then, Min-Liang Tan and his associates just wanted an advantage over their friends in network gaming. The original Boomslang was born from this obsession as the first mouse designed specifically for gamingit featured a 2,000 DPI ball sensor when the competition capped at 400 or 450 DPI. A monstrous difference for the time. This design in the shape of a snake’s head, this transparent shell which revealed the insides of the beast, it was something entirely new. Boomslang didn’t just launch Razer, it laid the foundations for an entire gaming peripherals market that is now worth several billion dollars.

The same, but better…much better

Twenty-six years later, the silhouette is intact. We immediately recognize the organic, almost animal shape, which evokes a Lamborghini Aventador hood, all in sleek angles. Razer has retained most of the original design while draping it in modernity, starting with this transparent plastic shell which takes us directly back to the aesthetic of the 90swhen Tech products liked to show off their circuits. A choice which unfortunately disappeared far too soon, and which we are happy to find here. Especially since transparency is not only nostalgic, it also serves to show off the Chroma RGB underneath, with nine configurable lighting zones among 16.8 million colors. It’s beautiful, really.

Razer has also added vegan leather to the sides and main buttons, which significantly improves grip and gives a premium feel to the grip. The mouse is ambidextrous, the side buttons fall naturally under the thumb and ring finger, which is a little unusual, but not at all annoying once in situation.

Under the hood, we are clearly in contemporary high-end with Razer Focus Pro 45K Gen-2 optical sensor (45,000 DPI, 99.8% accuracy), Gen-4 optical switches claimed for 100 million clicks, and HyperPolling Wireless technology at 8,000 Hz for extreme wireless responsiveness. Not much to do with the components of the original Boomslang.

A point to note for the crazy person who would like to use it on a daily basis: there is no USB-C port on the mouse. Charging is done exclusively via induction, thanks to the Mouse Dock Pro provided in the box. It’s elegant, it’s in tune with the times, but it means that you’ll have to remember to place the mouse on its dock regularly so as not to run out of juice in the middle of a game. The dock also serves as a wireless receiver, and it has the same translucent design as the mouse, which forms a visually coherent and frankly very successful whole.

A collector’s frame to display it

Normally, each copy is delivered with a collector’s LED frame that showcases the various internal parts of the mouse broken downa bit like a museum object. On our test unit, this frame was unfortunately not present. But in the official photos, the object is stunning and clearly reinforces the “showcase” dimension of the whole.

As exceptional as it is limited

The Boomslang 20th Anniversary Edition is available at 1 337 eurosobviously in reference to “leet speak”, a language originating from the gaming culture of the early days of the Internet where “1337” meant “elite”. The wink is fun, consistent with Razer’s DNA, and production is strictly limited to 1,337 numbered copies worldwide. Suffice to say that if you haven’t followed the pre-orders in real time, it’s already too late since the units were sold out in just a few hours.

At this Price, the question still arises: do we really use it for gaming, or do we display it on our desk? This is where we can’t help but think of the Huntsman Signature Edition that we had the opportunity to test, being another product from Razer, also expensive, but which had the advantage of being a keyboard that we could logically continue to use on a daily basis without it seeming absurd. La Boomslang oscillates between the functional object and the collector’s item.

Still, for an early fan or a collector, the object is exceptional. The Boomslang 20th Anniversary Edition is a love letter to gaming origins, technically impeccable, visually magnificent, and infinitely rare.
