The tidal wave Avatar will it take place this year? Three years later The Way of WaterJames Cameron is already returning to Pandora to tell the story of the fight against the Na’vi and humans. The Sully family must now face a new threat: a hostile Mangkwan clan also called the People of Ashes. The director promises that this third part will redistribute the cards on his fictional planet and change the power dynamics between the natives and the invaders.
The film introduces a new antagonist, the clan leader Varang. But while some reviews of the second film pointed to a redundancy of themes and issues for Avatar 2, does this third film have what is new to convince? Is visual prowess always enough? The first press opinions have just been shared. Note that the critical embargo will not be lifted for a few days, journalists have only been authorized to deliver a brief sentiment on Of fire and ashes. Tour d’horizon.
Redundant ?
For Loïse Delacotte, head of culture and entertainment at HuffPost, this third film does not suffer from its length (3h17). The journalist nevertheless emphasizes that the scenario is “redundant and predictable”, while praising the visual qualities of this 3D proposal. For cultural journalist Joey Morona (The Plain Dealer), the saga of James Cameron goes in circles. “This third installment offers 195 more minutes of the same recipe: stunning visual effects, thrilling action, heavy-handed metaphors and awkward dialogue. Enjoyment may vary, but the novelty begins to wear off.”
Alexandre Janowiack, editor Widescreen also underlines the lack of audacity of the scenario which, if it gains a little in nuances, is also more random. “A more epic, darker and (a little) more ambiguous show than the other parts, but also more narratively random”. Bill Bria, journalist at Slash Film et Discussing Film is much more enthusiastic, evoking a “a resounding success. A grandiose epic, whose characters and universe are surprisingly rich. What a pleasure to see a film of such magnitude while remaining a daring work of science fiction on the narrative and visual levels! The best to date.”
Kaitlyn Booth, editor-in-chief of Bleeding Cool warns spectators. Fans will find what they are looking for, those looking for something new will be disappointed. “It’s always the same rehashed ‘capture/rescue’ plot, with some laughable dialogue here and there. The length is interminable, and if you have vision problems, avoid 3D.” Finally, Allan Blanvillain, journalist for WorldOfSoftwareshares the same sentiment. It evokes laziness in writing. “Avatar 3 is always above the competition when it comes to featuring Pandora, in her fauna as in her fight. The film goes in circles for an infinitely long time where every minute or almost is felt.”
Reviews should be published a few days before the release of the film, expected on December 17 in France. Note that this third film is not the conclusion of the journey and that two other films are planned. James Cameron nevertheless warned the public, they will be conditioned to the financial success ofAvatar: Fire and Ash. Will the public be there? Response in a few days.
