Disney wants to make spectators roar at the end of 2024. After the success of Jon Favreau’s photorealistic film, the team is taking a new look at the universe of The Lion King and intends to tell the origins of Mufasa as much as the events that will lead to his death at the hands of his brother Scar. From his childhood to his arrival in the Land of Lions, the film directed by Barry Jenkins multiplies the winks and references to its predecessors. From the iconic “He lives in you” with musical themes modeled on those of Hans Zimmer, including Scar’s claws planted in his brother’s paws, Mufasa plays the nostalgia card.
If the story reinvents certain elements, such as the link of filiation between the one who is called to become the antagonist and Simba’s father, Mufasa also brings together elements from productions imagined for the small screen. This is the case regarding Kiara’s little brother, who appears at the end of the film. Simba joined Nala before their new child was born. When revealing his name, the film cultivates mystery. Lovers of Disney Animation productions for the small screen, however, know who it is.

The Lion Guard
In 2016, in an effort to increase the number of series for Disney Channel, the firm asked Ford Riley to imagine a series centered on Kiara’s adolescence, before the events of The Lion King 2. For the first time, her brother cadet is shown. His name is Kion and he is at the epicenter of the story. Fierce and with a great sense of responsibility, he is the leader of the Lion King’s guard. He makes a point of respecting the code and making sure he doesn’t take the same path as his great-uncle Scar. His birth at the end of the film is therefore a way of reminding us that Simba and his children were constructed in opposition to the antagonist.
We can nevertheless note that the film did not go so far as to mention a hero who grew up in Scar’s shadow. If he is obviously not on the trip in The Lion King 2the character hovers over Kovu’s destiny. As a reminder, the lion cub was raised among hyenas and Scar’s supporters. He will be sent by his mother Zira to Simba to betray him later.
A third film in the drawers?
Nothing seems to stop the race for remakes initiated by the Walt Disney Company. In 2025, two live-action features are on the program. Hostilities will be launched with Snow Whitebefore Lilo & Stitch don’t ride the summer wave. The stratospheric results of Lion King of 2019 make the license one of the most important in the firm’s catalog, a third film seemed to ensure. The fact remains that Mufasa does not meet with the expected success in the United States. For its first weekend, Barry Jenkin’s film bows to SEGA’s hedgehog. Even though he was expected to largely dominate this weekend, the story dedicated to the character only collected $35 million on American soil. If he should take advantage of the Christmas holidays to woo families, it is clear that it is not the tidal wave that Disney expected. We will undoubtedly have to wait until the end of production to assess the financial success of the film.
