What is this tip that has become viral on social networks?

The technique has the merit of being low-cost, and it is already shaking (not) the manufacturers of domestic alarms. The trend, which appeared a few years ago, cyclically returns to social networks. This summer, when many French people and French people were on vacation, she made her comeback. According to several videos that have become viral, aluminum foil would be a formidable hack to protect your house from burglaries. It would be enough to wrap a crumpled sheet around its door handle to protect yourself. In detail, the idea is based on several arguments:

  • The noise of aluminum rolling in contact with the hand or a tool could scare, and dissuade burglars
  • If the occupants are at home, noise could also alert a possible intrusion
  • In the event of an attempted break -in, the torn paper would serve as “proof”

A not brilliant tip

Pretty logically, the police and professionals in the sector do not see this method of a good eye. As early as 2024, German police called for caution in the face of this homemade DIY, not frankly effective in the event of theft. In addition to meeting no official security requirements, the main argument of the method is quickly questionable. The rustling of aluminum, if it occurs, is likely to go unnoticed, especially if the inhabitants are not in the immediate vicinity or if they sleep.

More generally, the trend highlights the ease with which fake news spread on social networks. By wrongly thinking of being protected, some too gullible Internet users could neglect to take real, more effective measures, such as installing an alarm or choosing a connected lock. Especially since burglars are not limited to the front door. Windows, balcony doors, cellars, garages … remain major intrusion points. In this case, the door handle packaging does not protect. This “tip” should in no case replace good practices and common sense: lock all the outlets, never hide your keys outside, remain vigilant on the suspicious comings and goings in the vicinity, and if possible, invest in connected alarms or certified locks. A armored door or a multipoint lock sounds like much more reliable protections than a piece of aluminum foil. Inevitably, it costs more.
