WhatsApp is once again taking cues from Instagram and adding a fresh way for you to interact with your contacts. According to a recent report by WABetaInfo, the instant messaging app is working on a new feature that will allow you to post questions directly in your status updates. While it’s still under development, the update was spotted in the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.21.8.
WhatsApp Status has mostly been about sharing photos, videos, text, and even voice updates. But soon, you might be able to ask open-ended questions as well. Yes, not a poll — a proper question box where your contacts can type out their own answers.
What will it offer?
The update will let users add just one question per status. So if you have more than one question in mind, you’ll need to post them separately through multiple statuses. A bit of a stretch, but it keeps things tidy.
Once you post the question, your contacts can respond to it right from the status screen. All the replies will be visible only to you. WhatsApp is also adding an option to reshare any of the responses in your own status — anonymously, of course. So even if you highlight a reply, the name of the person who sent it won’t be shown.
If this sounds a lot like Instagram’s question sticker, you’re not wrong. WhatsApp seems to be borrowing the idea but adapting it for a more private, personal audience. The intention here is clear — more interaction, but without the noise of a crowded feed.
When is it coming?
There’s no official release date yet, as the feature is still under development. But given that it’s already visible in the beta version, chances are we’ll see a rollout in the coming months. Just like polls added a bit of fun to group chats and channels, this question box could bring a new way to begin conversations with your friends.
