WhatsApp might be testing some new features to improve how once users communicate in a group. The latest feature being tested aims to make large conversations more organised. The platform is now experimenting with a new Group Member Tags option for Android beta users which allows people to add personalised labels next to their names. These tags can be up to 30 characters long and are designed to help identify a person’s role, expertise or purpose within any group. The feature is currently rolling out to select testers and works across both new and existing WhatsApp groups. WABetaInfo has mentioned that the feature is currently appearing in the most recent WhatsApp beta for Android (v. 2.25.17.42). The feature will permit users to give themselves a tag in the group. This is an appealing feature for organising groups and should be convenient for office group chats because group members will now be able to add their titles which should help in smooth onboarding. The custom tags appear right next to your name inside the chat, so it should be easy for everyone to see and understand everyone’s specific role in the group. news Also Read: Message Without WhatsApp? Users Have Control Over Their Own Tags

A distinctive feature about this adding to WhatsApp is that users have total control over what tag to add under their name and admins do not need to be involved or give permission. To ensure the feature is not abused, WhatsApp has built in some simple rules to keep everyone’s safety and consistency. This includes prohibiting special characters, checkmarks, and clickable hyperlinks, and a 30-character limit. These limitations provide certainty to prevent tags from being complicated, unreadable, or causing confusion in discussions.

Syncs Across Devices, Stays Within the Group

The new tag system is designed to stay consistent even if the user switches phones or reinstalls WhatsApp. The tag remains visible to all group members across devices. It stays confined to the specific group where it was created and does not appear anywhere else giving the users the freedom to choose different tags for different groups. Since the feature is still in the beta phase, only a limited number of Android users have access to it right now, but WhatsApp is expected to roll it out broadly in the coming months.
