WhatsApp takes radical new action against spam

WhatsApp has just taken a radical step to combat the floods of spam that circulate daily on messaging. According to TechCrunchthe company is about to introduce a limit on the number of messages a user can send to an unknown person without receiving a response.

Concretely, this means that the same unknown contact will no longer be able to flood your smartphone with unsolicited messages. Beyond a certain threshold and in the absence of a response from the recipient, the person (or company) will begin to receive warnings; if it persists, communication will simply be blocked temporarily.

The number of messages from which this blocking will occur has not been explicitly specified. According to TechCrunch, WhatsApp will test several thresholds in the different markets where this functionality will be tested in the coming weeks. She will thus be able to find the most appropriate value, representing a happy medium.

A new measure to clean up the platform

This is a clearly welcome initiative from the platform, which has become a vector of XXL spam over the years. Today, many users receive daily advertising messages from companies that use this channel to approach existing or potential customers with advertisements or promotional offers. Phishing attempts, such as fraudulent job offers or false delivery notifications, are also becoming more and more numerous.

This new proactive measure is part of a vast campaign to combat spam. Last year, for example, WhatsApp limited the number of messages business accounts can send each month and allowed users to unsubscribe from their feeds. Taken together, these initiatives could considerably limit the scale of the phenomenon. All these indelicate contacts will now have to pay more attention to their volume of messages and be more reasonable to avoid counterproductive blocking – with all that this implies for the peace of mind of the 500 million users on the platform.
