Microsoft have announced that the Remote Desktop app for Windows from the Microsoft Store will no longer be supported or available for download and installation from 27 May 2025. This only applies to the Microsoft Store application. It does not apply to the Remote Desktop client standalone installer (MSI).
How do I know if I am impacted?
You will need to take action to prevent disruption if you are currently using the Remote Desktop app from the Microsoft Store to access any of the following services:
Not all features are available in the new Windows App, the following actions are not currently supported in the new Windows App:
- Users connecting to Remote Desktops
- Users connecting to Remote Desktop Services
You should continue to user the Remote Desktop Connection app until support for this connection type is available in the Windows App. Please check if you are impacted by any of the known limitations of the new Windows App.
What action do I need to take?
To deploy the new Windows App through Intune you should take the following steps:
- Go to Apps > Windows Apps > Add
- Select the App type as Microsoft Store App (new)
- Search for Windows App and validate the details (Optional: You may want to add an application logo).
- Create the assignments on the application to deploy the application depending on requirement.
As with any application deployment you should always look to Pilot the deployment to validate the user experience and functionality for the full deployment.
You can also download the msi version of the Windows App if you have a preferred deployment method.
