After Michael Keaton, George Clooney, Christian Bale and Ben Affleck, DC Studios offered a new iteration of its famous Dark Knight in 2022. While the DCU license was having difficulty bringing together fans of comics in theaters, Warner Bros. decided to take a different route to dedicate a new film to the vigilante of Gotham.
As Joker before him, The Batman was on the fringes of the universe which saw Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot and even Henry Cavill wearing the colors of Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman. Matt Reeves, to whom we owe the excellent Planet of the Apes: The Showdown et Supremacywanted to immortalize the character’s detective skills in an atmosphere inspired by film noir.
A successful investigation
Robert Pattinson took the costume, facing Zoë Kravitz, Paul Danoo and Colin Farrell. The ninth film centered on the character evolved less than two years after his vigilante debut and as a killer attacks Gotham’s elite. He develops a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues that only a sleuth can decipher.

A film which had a certain success, restoring faith in the DC universe as long as it frees itself from its drifting license. The critics are also very enthusiastic, pushing Warner Bros to formalize the development of a second film.

An exit postponed many times
In January 2023, the new leaders of DC Studio discuss the future of The Batman at a time when the license starts from scratch. Matt Reeves’ second film is not canceled, it will find its place in an independent universe called DC Elseworlds. It is also under this banner that Joker: Folie à Deux was proposed. The release is then promised for 2025.
But a few months later, the sentence falls and the project will not finally arrive before 2026. The start date of filming remains a mystery. We will have to wait until 2024 to learn more on the subject, with an update shared by Warner Bros. It is finally the month of October 2027 which is considered. Asked about the reasons for such a postponement, James Gunn talks about writing the screenplay. He explained on Threads:
“Matt is committed to making the best film possible, and it’s anyone’s guess how long it will take to write a script. Once completed, it takes approximately two years for pre-production, filming and post-production.”
If things go as planned, Matt Reeeves is currently working on finishing the script. It must be said that the director does not really have the right to make mistakes; he aims to tackle a narrative arc adored by readers.
A sequel that promises to be very cool
Details about the story are still being kept secret. As the writing process is not complete, this is not very surprising. However, it is rumored that Reeves plans to carry the narrative arc of “The Court of Owls” on the screens. It spans thirteen issues and was written by Scott Snyder. We find Gotham’s vigilante facing a mysterious secret society that rules the city. When he finds the body of a man with daggers next to them with an engraved owl and the message “Bruce Wayne will die tomorrow”.
This is not the first time that this story has been brought to the screen, it was at the epicenter of the Gotham Knights series developed by The CW and largely disowned by spectators. We can hope that The Batman 2 does much better, enough to ensure a bright future for the bat. So answer the September 29, 2027 at the cinema. In the meantime, it is already possible to know the fate reserved for Oswald Cobblepot after the finale of the first film thanks to the series The Penguin broadcast on Max. It was widely presented as a bridge between Matt Reeves’ two films, the latter of which is also in production.
