The increase in Parisian transport has once again made people cringe, with a monthly rate which now exceeds €90 in Île-de-France. With the arrival of the Easy and Liberté+ Passes, which promise a bill based on actual consumption, the dilemma intensifies: is it better to opt for a monthly package, or pay for your journeys on a case-by-case basis? We take stock.
If you are 100% face-to-face, the monthly subscription remains a safe bet
If you have to go to your workplace every day, the calculation is quick: with a trip costing €2.04, this comes to you at just over €20 per week (based on 5 days worked per week), or €80 per month. On paper, it’s a little less than a monthly subscription, but there are two major problems:
- You only have two “margin” round trips left before exceeding the Price of the monthly package, which represents very little over the entire month
- Officially (and even if many companies are satisfied with just one monthly receipt per year), the Liberté+ package is not eligible for employer reimbursement
In the case of 100% face-to-face work, it is better to opt for a monthly package, which will cost you less after employer reimbursement, and will allow you to travel as much as you want, without the risk of blowing your budget.
If you are 100% teleworking, the question does not even arise
Unless you go out more every evening, there is no point in opting for a monthly subscription if you don’t need it on a daily basis. You might as well reserve exceptional trips for a Liberté+ subscription, especially since in the event of a busy day, the price of your trips is capped at €12. After three round trips, you are no longer billed, and automatically switch to the day rate.
The case of hybrid work
The question is more delicate in the case of hybrid work, which concerns the vast majority of employees today in France. At the rate of one round trip per day, here is how much a month of Navigo Liberté+ pass will cost you depending on your teleworking time:
- 1 day of face-to-face work / week = 4-5 AR per month, or around €20 > Liberté+
- 2 face-to-face days / week = 8-9 AR per month, or around €36 > Liberté+
- 3 face-to-face days / week = 12-13 AR per month, or around €53 > Monthly
- 4 face-to-face days / week = 15-17 AR per month, or around €70 > Monthly
Based on the legal principle that a Liberté+ subscription is still not eligible for employer reimbursement, you must not exceed €45 to remain profitable compared to a monthly plan. Unless you are on site one or two days per week, in which case Liberté+ is more profitable, it is better to opt once again for a monthly subscription. Remember to check if your employer asks you for an invoice every month, you never know. Also note that this configuration does not take into account any additional journeys for your evening or weekend trips.
In general, calculate the number of trips made over the month: for the monthly subscription to be profitable, you must make at least 22 monthly round trips.
