55 million viewers over the first 34 days of broadcast. At first glance, the audiences of Rings of Powerreported last week by Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke, are far from catastrophic. However, the series undeniably disappointed: the appointment was made a long time ago, and the issues remaining unresolved after the first burst of a very real episode. But then what’s wrong?
Difficult comparison
The first disadvantage accused by season 2 of Rings of Power lies in its difficult comparison with season 1. In 2022, the return of King Tolkien to our screens created an event. The first episode had accumulated 25 million viewers in the first 24 hours alone, with a cumulative audience of 150 million fans after one month of broadcast. The series was then ranked as one of the most popular programs in the history of the platform, all sectors combined.
Two years later, season 2 struggles to reproduce the same feat. With only 50 million viewers in its first month of existence, the last episodes of Rings of Power do less well than Fallout, which garnered no less than 65 million spectators in 16 days, but also less well than season 4 of The Boysreleased in June, and which recorded 55 million spectators in 39 days. However, it is the most expensive series in television historywith an estimated budget of $1 billion for season 1 alone.
Unclear audiences
If season 1 had received a lot of praise, both from critics and spectators, it had also suffered a lot of criticism, particularly on certain narrative biases. If we are to believe the (unofficial) information from The Hollywood Reporter, only 45% of the spectators present for the first episode finally made it through to the end of this first salvo. It must be believed that season 2 lost more fans along the way.
For the moment, season 3 has not yet been made official, but Prime Video still seems ready to overcome the five bursts of episodesintended to conclude the fantastic saga. It remains to be seen whether the lack of profitability of the season will not call into question its future.
