Today, the taxation of solar panels looks like a headache. Individuals benefit from a 10 % reduced VAT for small installations, limited to 3 kWc, but switch to 20 % as soon as the power exceeds this threshold. Result: many projects exceeding 3 kWc, which corresponds to the classic needs of a home, find themselves penalized by an increased cost.
But from October 1, 2025, the government decided to simplify the system. All installations of less than 9 kWc will be subject to a reduced VAT rate to 5.5 %. A measure modeled on energy renovations, which should lighten the bill for several thousand euros for certain households!
A significant gain
Concretely, an installation of 6 kWc invoiced today € 15,000 HT returns to € 18,000 including tax with VAT at 20 %. After October 2025, the same installation would be invoiced € 15,825, or more than € 2,000 in immediate savings. A sufficient gap to convince many households to wait a few days before signing.
This fiscal boost has a double objective, it wants to both stimulate the use of residential solar and accelerate the energy transition, while France is still late compared to certain European neighbors.
Be careful however, this reduced rate will not be granted to any installation. Power must remain less than or equal to 9 kWc, which covers the vast majority of domestic projects. The installation must also be carried out by a qualified professional (ideally RGE) and meet technical criteria set by decree. A vigilance necessary to avoid the proliferation of low -end equipment and guarantee a satisfactory energy efficiency.
This drop in VAT is above all a signal addressed to individuals. After direct aid and self -consumption premiums, taxation is also at the service of the transition. The message is clear: solar is no longer a luxury, but a choice encouraged by the state. It remains to be seen whether the installers will be able to respond to the influx of requests expected this fall. Because if taxation is simplified, the market may be stretching, with installation deadlines that could quickly get longer.
