Who would have thought that after James Bond, Daniel Craig would so quickly find such a significant role? Benoit Blanc since Knives Out in 2019, the British actor excels in the exercise. With Rian Johnson, he dusts off the “whodunit”a genre popularized by Agatha Christie and all the directors who have captured her imagination.
After the discovery of the excellent Wake Up Dead Manavailable from December 12 on Netflixwe come to hope that the detective has the same career as a certain Hercule Poirot. But a fourth film is not a priori assured. We take stock.
The trilogy is finished
When Netflix offered itself the exploitation rights toAt loggerheads pour 450 million dollarsthe platform has only signed on for two other Benoit Blanc adventures. Glass Onion et Wake Up Dead Man are therefore officially the last two films of the detective.
However, the success having been there in 2023 and expected to be again this year, it is difficult to see the red N doing without such a license “prestige”. Knives Out is one of those sagas that attracts the general public as much as it pleases demanding moviegoers. At a time when the Red N is trying to reconcile its ambitions of volume and quality, we can quite imagine that a fourth film is already in the drawers.
This is all the more true since Rian Johnson does not lack enthusiasm at the idea of returning to his character and his investigations. The director hinted that he could continue his momentum.
“Until the end of my life”
Facing Variety last October, Johnson said he was ready to continue as long as the public is there.
“I don’t feel tired of working on these films. On the contrary, I feel full of energy after this one. As long as the public wants to see them, and Daniel and I still have as much fun, I will be happy to continue making them for the rest of my life.”
For his part, Daniel Craig indicated in May that he was quite keen. He will follow his director without reservations. This is already a good sign. Not content with having left his mark on recent popular culture with his 007, Craig seems ready to see his image more closely associated with that of Benoit Blanc.
But all is not won
In addition to the possibility for Netflix not to order a fourth film, Rian Johnson has already imposed some conditions which could taint the hope of quickly finding him behind the camera for At Knives Out 4.
Déjà, he must have a story that fascinates him and is not considering making a sequel… for the sake of making a sequel. A completely laudable intention even if we hope that whoever also acts on the script will not be struck by blank page syndrome.
And there will be no question for him of calling on someone else to take care of it, of franchising his work to devote himself to different projects. If there is a new film, it will be him and no one else. It has the merit of being clear.
It remains to be seen whether many Netflix users will watch Wake Up Dead Man (notre critique) this December 12 and if the film will manage to climb the ranking of the most viewed in the history of the platform.
As a reminder, the second film has been viewed more than 117 million times in less than 30 days. A performance which allowed him to join the historic ranking of the N rouge. It has since been ousted, but remains a very big success. Wake Up Dead Man can he do better?
