Word has been a sensation for over two years and continues to challenge word puzzle enthusiasts every day.
The game was developed by Josh Wardle, a software engineer from Brooklyn, and was originally a gift for his girlfriend who loved word games. Initially intended for the couple’s own enjoyment during the COVID lockdowns, Wardle quickly recognized its wider appeal and launched Word online in October 2021.

“There’s a reason that each word is five letters long and you get six tries to guess it. That may seem arbitrary, but with the prototype version I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of tries players were allowed. “, he said Newsweek in January 2022.
