A CHINESE company has unveiled the world’s longest range SUV, taking the fight directly to Elon Musk and Tesla.

Chinese electric vehicle maker Xpeng has unveiled a long-range version of its G7 SUV, a model it hopes will make a major impact both at home and overseas.

The company has ambitious plans for the G7 in the domestic market, as well as in Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

According to the SCMP, the G7 boasts the longest combined driving range of any SUV in the world.

Equipped with a 55.8kWh battery and a small 60-litre petrol engine, the vehicle can travel an estimated 1,704 kilometres on a single charge and tank.

Unlike conventional electric vehicles, the G7 uses both its electric motor and petrol engine in tandem.

The petrol engine does not drive the wheels directly; instead, it acts as a generator, charging the battery while the car is in motion.

In simple terms, the vehicle is always propelled by its electric motor, allowing it to achieve significantly greater distances.

Xpeng claims the G7 can cover the equivalent of a journey from Seattle to Los Angeles without stopping to recharge.

This range far exceeds even the most fuel-efficient petrol or diesel vehicles.

The G7 starts at around £21,000, with the extended-range version priced the same as the fully electric model.

Inspired by Elon Musk’s Tesla, Xpeng is rapidly emerging as one of China’s leading electric vehicle manufacturers.

Last year, it overtook rivals Nio and Li Auto in delivery numbers.

Vehicles like the G7 form a key part of Xpeng’s “Go-Global 2.0” strategy, which aims to expand the brand internationally and challenge Tesla’s dominance in global EV markets.
