X Adds Paid Partnership Labels for Sponsored Posts

X, formerly Twitter, will now let users add a “Paid Partnership” label to sponsored content.

The move provides creators on X with a cleaner way to indicate when they are posting branded content. Until now, they have used hashtags like #Ad or #Sponsored to comply with the Federal Trade Commission’s requirement to clearly disclose any material connection to a brand or organization.

“Today we’re announcing Paid Partnership labels on posts,” announced X’s product head Nikita Bier on Monday. “While we want to encourage people to build their businesses on X, undisclosed promotions hurt the integrity of the product and lead people to distrust the content they read on X. This new feature will allow you to comply with regulations, but more importantly: it enables you to be transparent with your followers.”

To add the Paid Partnership label before posting, tap the flag icon under the text field and enable it. If you need to add the label after posting, tap the three-dot menu next to your username on the post, then select Add content disclosure.

Branded content from several industries is ineligible for Paid Partnership labels on X. That includes dating & marriage services, alcohol, sexual products, drugs, political or social issues, health and wellness products, weight-loss products, medicines, tobacco, and weapons. Upon request, however, the platform may allow the label to be used for some of these categories on a case-by-case basis, according to a Help Center page.
