XBOX has been making a lot of changes lately, particularly when it comes to its apps and mobile offerings.
The company has been reducing its number of mobile apps, including removing the Xbox Game Pass app and merging its features with the Xbox app.
Xbox has started to roll out new features that will allow players to download and stream games directly via its app, and these features are expected to be fully implemented early next year.
Xbox boss Phil Spencer has even spoken about the importance of mobile features in developing an Xbox handheld.
The company has recently announced that it will be sunsetting another Xbox app as it moves to streamline its mobile services.
This time it’s the Xbox Avatar Editor app that’s on the chopping block, after it was first released in 2018.
The app allowed Xbox players to create their own avatar that could be viewed on their Microsoft profiles.
Avatar Editor was created off the success of the avatars in the Xbox 360 era, though the Xbox Original Avatars app will outlive its successor.
Xbox Avatar Editor will shut down on January 9, 2025, and after this people will no longer be able to use or change their characters.
It appears that Xbox will be removing the app due to mobile app changes and the low number of users.
A statement from Xbox reads: “Microsoft is dedicated to delivering great experiences for players, including a variety of options to personalize their gaming experience with Xbox.
“Due to low engagement and our shift in focus towards delivering other player experiences, the Xbox Avatar Editor app will no longer be available.”
Despite the closure, there is some good news for users of the Xbox Avatar Editor app.
Those who purchased anything from the app between November 1, 2023, and January 9, 2025, will have their purchases refunded.
However, anyone who made a purchase before this date will not be eligible for a refund.
Xbox Mobile
Xbox has been making major changes to its mobile offerings, and we think that this will continue to be the case.
While most consoles have just one app where you can use all of your required features, Xbox has always had several.
Combining the existing apps for various Xbox services into a more coordinated system seems to be the way forward.
