Xiaomi yesterday issued an urgent clarification regarding circulating online claims that a fire had broken out on the battery production line at the company’s auto factory. Xiaomi said a small fire in the battery workshop of its auto factory in 2024 stemmed from an operational error during equipment testing, not from any defects in its vehicle batteries. The company said an operator, working in manual mode during debugging and optimisation, mistakenly caused a collision between equipment and a battery pack being carried by an automated guided vehicle (AGV). The impact scratched a cell, leading to a short circuit and a brief ignition. The fire was quickly contained, did not affect other production areas, and caused no injuries, Xiaomi said. The company added that the incident stemmed from a deviation in testing procedures and was unrelated to battery design, materials or manufacturing quality. Xiaomi said battery packs used in its SU7 and YU7 models meet all relevant national safety standards. [Xiaomi, in Chinese]
