The final of You, Expected after seven years of suspense on Netflix, put an end to the bloody journey of Joe Goldberg. This fifth and last salvo of episodes promised to bring a masterful conclusion to one of the most celebrated anti-heroes on the small screen. We explain the end of an emotional riche.
In this last season, Joe returns to New Yorkprotected by his wife Kate and surrounded by his son Henry. Despite his efforts to lead a normal life, his old demons reappear quickly. He falls back into his obsessions when he meets Bronte, a new employee of his bookstore, who will play a decisive role in his fall.
The revenge of the old victims
Joe thought he had found a new brinter sister soul, but he will finally realize that she is playing a double game. The young woman is intimately linked to Guinevere Beck, and allied with other survivors and close to the victims to trap him. By dint of tricks, she manages to lock Joe in his own cage. After a failed escape attempt, and a fire that fails to kill him, he is finally saved by Bronte, who accepts his marriage proposal, before betraying him again, and delivering him to the police.
No happy ending
Joe’s trial becomes a media event. For the first time, it is found guilty of all his murdersespecially those of Love Quinn and Guinevere Beck. He is sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Behind the bars, Joe receives fans letters and feels like her fate. Until the end, he will refuse to recognize his guilt, presenting himself as a victim of a corrupting society.
The end of You is marked by a reflection on collective responsibility: as in real life, while Penn Badgley was indignant at the fascination of fans for his neurotic Stalker character, the series points to the media glorification of criminals and the fascination of the public for toxic antiheros. After being presented as a romantic predator, Joe finds no redemptionand remains a prisoner of his narcissism and his illusions. This does not prevent him from paying for his crimes. Kate obtains custody of their son Henry and rebuilds her life, while Bronte rehabilitates the memory of Beck.
