Apple has live activity notifications (Live Activities) from iOS 16, Google will have live updates notifications (Live Update) with Android 16! On paper, these two functions are similar: these are somewhat special alerts, always present on the screen, responsible for displaying the evolution of an activity in progress. This can be the active follow -up of a carpooling trip, a meal delivery, or even a current phone call.
A notification to always have before you
These notifications should have appeared with the final version of Android 16 delivered on June 10, but this novelty-one of the most important with the new Material 3 Expressive design, also pending-was not there. Android 16’s QPR1 update, which should fall into the fall, should integrate it.
Live updates materialize in two different ways. The first, the most immediately visible, is a notification which is displayed at the top of the notifications panel as well as on the locking screen. The second is a pill -shaped lozenge, placed to the right of the clock in the state bar.
The Live Update notification must represent an current activity, with a separate start and end, describes Google in a document intended for developers. Most live information must represent explicitly triggered activities by the user: starting of training, starting the navigation by car, calling for a carpooling, etc.
Applications can activate a live update notification when the activity is imminent, for example if the user indicates that he wants to monitor a event as a football match. Google gives another example, that of a boarding pass. A classic notification is thus appropriate several hours before the flight, but it should only become a live update notification when the user arrives at the airport or once the boarding started. Live notification is not necessary for monitoring a package, the user does not need to monitor him permanently.
To avoid the too full of Live Update notifications, Google traces red lines that developers must respect: these alerts cannot serve as promotions, no ads, no cat messages, no upcoming events in the calendar or quick access to the functions of an app. We will see if the apps will correctly respect Google’s recommendations.

As for the pill (“state chips”), it allows the user to follow the information live when the notification is not visible. The pastille can include a small icon, the absolute time of the arrival of a race for example, or to transmit an alert status (if the text has less than seven characters, it will appear in full).
