TL;DR

  • New code spotted in One UI 8.5 firmware reveals a new “short summary” feature for the My Files app.
  • When enabled, My Files would generate brief previews of the contents of TXT and PDF files without opening them.
  • It is unclear if this feature relies on the cloud or on-device processing for these summaries.

Samsung’s next One UI release was long expected to be a significant update, but the leaked One UI 8.5 changelog provided a clearer sense of its magnitude. While the leaked changelog serves as a good baseline, we’ve now spotted code for new features in the leaked One UI 8.5 firmware that aren’t included in this changelog. In future One UI builds, the My Files app will soon receive a file summary feature to help you open the right file.

Within newer One UI 8.5 leaked firmware, we’ve spotted new code that indicates that the My Files app will soon show short summaries for PDF and text files before the user even opens them.

Code

<string name="menu_short_summary">Short summary</string>
<string name="show_file_summaries">Show file summaries</string>
<string name="show_file_summaries_body">Show short summaries for PDFs and TXT files so you can see what they're about before opening them.</string>
<string name="summary_error">Can't summarize this file because it might contain inappropriate content.</string>
<string name="failed_summary">Something went wrong while summarizing the text.</string>

The strings suggest that there’s likely a toggle for the feature. If the user has opted in, One UI’s My Files app will show short summaries for PDF and text files, likely in the file browser view. This would be helpful if the contents of these files are not clearly indicated by their file names, allowing the user to choose the correct file they are looking for.

As the strings suggest, My Files will not summarize files it suspects contain inappropriate content.

It remains to be seen how My Files will handle these file summaries. There’s no direct mention of AI, but AI is almost always used for file summarization features. So will these summaries be generated on-device or in the cloud? And would there be limits on file sizes for these summaries to be generated? These questions remain unanswered for now.

Samsung hasn’t yet revealed if and when it will open the beta program for its next update. Rumors suggest that the One UI 8.5 beta program may start next week, and we’ll be watching to see if this feature is included in the first beta release, as it is not part of the leaked changelog.

⚠️ An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release.
