We have all grown up watching YouTube videos, and initially, most videos on the platform were low quality. Over time came HD, 4K, and more, allowing people to create beautiful, clear videos. Now, as part of enhancing videos on the platform, the Google-owned app is taking a major leap toward upgrading video quality on larger screens by introducing an AI-based upscaling feature called ‘Super-Resolution.’

What is the YouTube AI Upscaling Feature?

YouTube has introduced a new technology that will automatically upgrade videos uploaded in lower resolutions. Videos that lie between 240p and 720p will be upgraded to high-definition quality with the help of this new feature. YouTube aims to enhance the viewing experience on larger screens, as most people nowadays watch YouTube videos on TVs.

On larger screens like put TVs, the low-quality videos often appear blurry and outdated, and hence, YouTube thought of bringing a new AI feature that will enhance the overall viewing experience, even if the video quality is low.

Clarity to Older Videos

The new AI upscaling feature by YouTube uses an advanced artificial intelligence to analyze frames and enhance video details. This results in more refined pictures and clarity.

The Super Resolution feature uses advanced artificial intelligence to analyze frames and enhance video details, resulting in a more refined picture. The tech giant says, initially, the AI upscale will only work on 1080p videos, but gradually the feature will expand to support 4K upscaling too.

Additionally, YouTube will allow users to opt out of this feature if they don’t want to change the resolution of their video, allowing them to have full control over their content. Not only this, but the original files and resolution settings will remain intact and accessible.

Channel Preview on Homepage

YouTube is also introducing immersive channel previews on the homepage that will allow users to flip through content. The platform has also redesigned its ‘Shows’ section, organizing videos into binge-worthy series for a smoother viewing experience.

Thumbnails Upload Limits

Other than AI upscaling, YouTube is also coming up with a thumbnail upload option. It means now the upload limit for thumbnails increases from 2MB to 50MB. This will allow creators to upload high-quality 4 K-ready images as thumbnails.

Smarter Search and Shopping Integrations

YouTube TV app is also getting an upgrade, and now users will be able to search from a creator’s channel page, and the results will prioritize videos from the creator. The tech giant is also testing a QR-based shopping integration on the platform. If this feature works, then you will be able to scan any QR code on the screen and will be able to directly purchase products that are featured on the videos.
