‘Under the Shadow’ (2016)

Watch On

Ok, so this first one leans more horror than straight mystery thriller, but it’s spooky season so I think it still makes the cut. Like “The Woman in Cabin 10,” it plays with your perception of reality, blurring the lines between what’s real and what’s in the characters’ heads until you’re second-guessing everything you thought you knew about where this movie is going.

Set in 1980s Iran, “Under the Shadow” follows a mother (Narges Rashidi) and daughter (Avin Manshadi) grappling with the harsh realities of life in post-revolution Tehran. Despite the danger practically knocking at their door, she refuses to uproot her daughter from the only life she’s ever known. Not even an undetonated missile crashing into their apartment building can scare her away.

But when that missile seems to unleash supernatural forces attempting to possess her daughter, she has no choice but to face her anxieties head-on. “Under the Shadow” stands out as one of the most chilling entries on this list, with plenty of spine-tingling moments that haunt you long after the credits roll.

‘Pig’ (2021)

Watch On

Less thriller and more steadily unfolding mystery, “Pig” is more slower-paced than the other entries on this list, but I swear the pay-off is worth the wait. The movie doesn’t drag for a moment thanks to its deeply compelling lead character, brought to life — warts, wounds, and all — by Nicholas Cage in one of his best roles to date. You can’t help but root for him to be reunited with his pet pig.

Yep, a stolen sow is the central mystery this time around. It’s not as salacious as a body thrown overboard or the hunt for a killer, but you’ll get wrapped up in all its twists and turns all the same. Cage stars as Rob, a former big city chef now leading a quiet life in the Oregon wilderness, foraging for truffles with his prized pig and only companion. But when intruders make off with her in the middle of the night, Rob’s world is upended.

His search for his beloved animal forces him to return to a past he tried to leave in the rear-view mirror, where he confronts long-buried grief. But most of all, he just wants his pig back. “Pig” unfolds as a quiet but powerful mystery, and over its concise 92-minute runtime, it reveals just how far Rob is willing to go—not for revenge, but for love and connection.

Watch On

Since it’s based on a true story, “Woman of the Hour” isn’t gripping and suspenseful because you don’t know what will happen, but rather because you’re piecing together a trainwreck in motion and can’t look away until you see how it ends. It’s every woman’s worst nightmare realized, and like in “The Woman in Cabin 10,” she’s on her own to get herself out alive.

Anna Kendrick directs and stars as Cheryl Bradshaw, an aspiring actress who signs up as a contestant on a popular 1970s dating show to help get her career off the ground. Her candor and razor-sharp wit tend to rub directors the wrong way, but the audience eats it up. Unfortunately, so does Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto), an eligible bachelor who’s revealed to be a serial killer in the movie’s opening moments.

Tense and deeply unsettling, “Woman of the Hour” is a chilling reminder of how easily evil can hide in plain sight. It’s a well-made thriller that dives deeper than your usual true crime story, and keeps you on the edge of your seat to see whether Cheryl’s destined to be the next victim or the one that got away.
