Renewable energies supplied 58 percent of the electricity consumed in Germany in the first half of 2026. This is the result of projections by the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) and the Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry (BDEW). Compared to the previous year, this is an increase of around three percent for the same period. For the entire year 2025, the proportion was 55.8 percent. Compared to the same period last year, the amount of wind energy in particular increased. One reason for this was a low-wind first half of 2025. As a result, the production of wind energy on land rose by seven percent, and at sea it was almost 28 percent. Solar energy production also increased by 3.7 percent. Only in hydropower there was a decline of 7.7 percent.
Renewables important for independence and climate
According to ZSW boss Frithjof Staiß, renewable energies play two essential roles today. On the one hand, they are the “sharpest sword” to combat climate change. In this regard, he points to the heat wave of the past few days and notes that these events show that there is an urgent need for success in climate protection.
On the other hand, in his opinion, renewable energies make us less dependent on imports of fossil fuels. The expansion will also make the economy more resilient. He also notes that the energy crises of the past months and years were triggered by fossil fuels, not renewables.
