Pure Storage to rebrand as Everpure, acquire data management startup 1touch – News

Pure Storage Inc. today announced a rebrand and a startup acquisition designed to enhance its data management capabilities.

Starting next Thursday, the data storage provider will operate under the name Everpure. The company won’t change its ticker symbol from PSTG, but will refresh its product names to reflect the new branding. Its Pure Storage Platform, for example, will become known as the Everpure Platform.

The company stated that the change reflects its “greater impact from reshaping storage to defining the future of data management.” Everpure entered the storage market in 2011 with a block-based flash system called the FlashArray 300. Today, it also offers file and object storage systems along with data management tools for cloud environments. The startup acquisition that Everpure announced today is designed to extend its cross-platform data management capabilities.

The company is buying 1touch.io Inc., a nine-year-old startup backed by $28 million in funding. It sells a platform called Kontxtual that can scan an organization’s on-premises infrastructure and cloud environments to create an inventory of its data assets. From there, the software generates a detailed description of each dataset.

Kontxtual highlights records that contain sensitive information such as credit card numbers. It also maps out how each data asset is used. Kontxtual can determine which department is responsible for managing a dataset, who uses it and what changes the users made over time. The platform could, for example, point out if a record was recently moved between two internal databases.

The information collected by Kontxtual can help administrators spot cybersecurity risks. According to 1touch, the platform identifies employee accounts that have overly broad access to sensitive records. It also spots dormant accounts that shouldn’t have access in the first place.

Kontxtual can automatically remediate certain risks by sending instructions to a company’s third-party cybersecurity tools. It provides connectors for more than 100 such tools. A bank, for example, could configure Kontxtual to automatically remove sensitive financial information from a dataset before it’s copied to an analytics environment.

The platform also lends itself to other tasks. Administrators can use Kontxtual to scan their company’s systems for duplicate datasets and remove them to reduce storage costs. A regulatory compliance team, meanwhile, could search for files that may not be stored in accordance with GDPR.

Everpure plans to integrate Kontxtual with its Everpure Platform. According to the company, 1touch’s technology will help customers remove redundant data and ensure that their records they keep don’t contain any quality issues. Everpure expects to complete the acquisition between May and August.
