Scottish tech group Skyscanner is exploring how generative AI can be used in the flight planner sector with the launch of a new app in ChatGPT.

The Skyscanner app, powered by OpenAI’s flagship generative model, will allow users to give custom requests using natural language and receive tailored responses for trip planning.

Skyscanner is among the largest company in its sector, claiming to be used by 160 million users a month.

“We’ve been at the forefront of cutting-edge flight search, ensuring that travellers have all the right tools to reduce friction and give them more confidence in finding the right flight for them,” said Skyscanner’s chief AI officer Pierro Sierra.

“Travellers can now access the Skyscanner app in ChatGPT to search for the best options and flight prices for their trip.

“We’ll continue evolving travel search beyond form-fills toward dynamic, answer-led experiences. We’ll scale natural language search with explainability, and expand agentic scenarios only where trust and economics work.  Success in AI will be defined by better decisions and earned traveller trust.”

The move comes as more and more popular legacy digital brands deploy generative AI features, suggesting a wider shift to conversation-based service searches.

This month popular property search platform Rightmove said it would be integrating Google’s Gemini generative AI technology in its search to allow for natural language requests and personalised results.
