Apple’s Studio Display leak hints at a big chnage in strategy

Apple is reportedly preparing to launch two new Studio Display models, potentially splitting the lineup into standard and premium versions, according to recent code discoveries.

Internal files reference the codenames J427 and J527, suggesting separate configurations and staggered release timelines, a move that would significantly update Apple’s external monitor offerings.

The current findings, first reported by Macworld and confirmed by the latest macOS 26.3 files, point to a dual-model strategy. This approach would allow Apple to offer a more budget-conscious option alongside a feature-rich monitor tailored for creative professionals and high-demand users.

Both forthcoming displays are expected to feature key technical upgrades, including 120Hz ProMotion technology for incredibly smooth motion and animations, as well as HDR support for superior contrast and colour depth.

These features represent a substantial leap from the current Studio Display, which is limited to a standard 60Hz refresh rate.

The more advanced J527 model appears to be the flagship product. Leaks suggest it will feature a larger 32-inch screen size – a size comparable to Apple’s high-end Pro Display XDR, which currently starts at $4,999.

Furthermore, the J527 is rumoured to include superior audio drivers and expanded I/O ports, addressing current limitations. The codename J527 was initially spotted in iOS 26 code last year, with a targeted launch date of 2026.

Conversely, the J427 model is positioned as the standard version and is labelled as a 2025 product. While expected to include ProMotion and HDR, it will likely retain a form factor and feature set closer to the existing 27-inch Studio Display, serving as a direct replacement.

The current Studio Display has a limited port selection, offering only three USB-C ports and a Thunderbolt port, a configuration that the premium J527 aims to surpass.

The splitting of the Studio Display lineup would mark a big strategy shift. It signals a strategic effort to cater to different segments of the market, offering affordability with J427 and advanced features with J527. This move comes as Apple has teased a week of announcements, with new Macs, iPads, and MacBooks expected to be unveiled – although whether we’ll see these displays remains to be seen.
