Fake shops with AI: How to protect yourself from the new generation of fraud

What once looked like a cheap website builder and could quickly be recognized as a fake by a few simple things, now looks like a perfectly styled brand shop. This is made possible primarily by generative AI: texts, images, reviews, because all of this can now be generated automatically in a quality that can deceive even experienced online shoppers.

A number shows that the problem is real: around one in eight online buyers in Germany have fallen for a fake shop in the past two years, as a survey by the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations shows. If you want to protect yourself, you have to look more closely than before. At the same time, many customers rightly say that it is becoming increasingly difficult to clearly identify fakes.

What AI has really changed in fake shops

A still widespread misconception is that such fake shops only look better with the help of AI. But above all, they also appear more professional, because elements such as poor and incorrect translations and unprofessional design are a thing of the past. We now see convincing and error-free product descriptions and high-quality product photos, some of which are taken from the manufacturers themselves.

Editorial recommendations

In addition, there are realistic-sounding brand stories and an overall coherent structure with payment processing, return information, customer management and so on. Legal pages such as general terms and conditions or data protection declarations are also formulated correctly. This was often an element that caused many to hesitate and could act as a litmus test.

But what has increased above all is the speed at which such shops can be set up and operated. Thanks to generative AI, fraudsters can create entire shop systems within a few hours. This makes it more difficult for the consumer advice centers, which maintain a list of suspicious shops or shops that have already been exposed as fake, to stay on the ball. In addition, such shops disappear quickly – and reappear under a new domain with a slightly different design.

The price remains a signal – but no longer proof

Extremely low prices are still an indication, but this is no longer as clear as it used to be. AI-based fake shops are increasingly working with the same (and therefore realistic) discount strategies as online retailers. Instead of “90 percent discount on everything,” they rely on credible promotions such as “20 percent on previous season models” or “remaining stock sales due to inventory changes.” Such offers seem plausible and at the same time trigger the usual buying pressure.

But only when combined with other factors does a clear picture emerge. In the past, more or less invented quality seals were a reliable indication of seriousness, but today they are among the most frequently copied elements. But with seals such as the Trusted Shops seal of quality or the EHI certified online shop seal of quality, you can access the underlying certificate page where the shop is verified as “valid”. However, if it is just a static graphic element or if the click leads to an obscure page, caution is advised.

However, some legal elements can still arouse suspicion: If the complete legal notice required in Germany is missing or contains obscure and contradictory information, extreme caution is advised. The same applies to terms and conditions and data protection declaration – but here in particular the existence is no longer a sufficient factor.

You should also check whether the company name and address match, whether the company actually appears in the commercial register and whether the telephone number provided matches the company. Even a quick comparison via search engines regarding the experiences of other users often quickly provides clarity. By the way, it can also make sense to call a support phone number that may be on file and ask for details.

Payment methods: The last protection mechanism

It also makes sense to take a closer look at the payment methods offered. Because fake shops often rely on advance payment, i.e. bank transfer or direct payment. In some cases, well-known payment providers such as Paypal are displayed without them actually being integrated.
Reputable shops usually offer several secure payment options, including purchase on account (possibly through a service provider such as Klarna), credit card payment with the associated chargeback options and other payment services with buyer protection. If none of this is the case or if the payment methods do not work correctly, this can be a strong warning signal.

In addition, there may also be some other more subtle indications of inconsistency. Especially if a shop seems too perfect and the entire shop structure appears unusually homogeneous and not very individual, this can be an indication of the generic shop with an interchangeable structure. But recognizing something like this is anything but clear and requires a lot of experience.

It can also make sense to look for real customer reviews on external platforms, social media presences with a longer history or traceable company development.

Advertising as (false) credibility

A particularly critical point is the increasing use of paid advertising. Many consumers assume that ads on major platforms are automatically verified, but this is a misconception. Every second of the fake shops examined by the consumer advice center now advertises on Google or other advertising networks.

The fraudsters use targeted advertising space to generate trust and at the same time achieve a high reach. The ad itself then appears just as serious as the shop behind it. Therefore, additional checks should always be carried out with Google or social media ads.

Developments clearly show that it is becoming increasingly difficult to clearly identify fake shops as such. Intuition alone is no longer enough. This applies even (and often especially) to customers who regularly look for bargains online. But anyone who questions prices, actively checks existing quality seals, checks mandatory information and uses secure payment methods with buyer protection reduces their risk significantly – even in a world in which fake shops are becoming more and more perfect.

In addition to the visual assessments and the factors mentioned that can be checked, new technological solutions are also emerging that are intended to automatically detect fake shops or actively warn consumers. However, it will probably be some time before reliable fake shop detectors, i.e. browser extensions with a timely maintained database, perform a similar job to spam filters in email traffic. The fake shop lists from the consumer advice center can still be a first clue.
