HBO Max is getting ready to merge with Paramount+, and things are going to get complicated. Until then, it’s still pumping out new stuff every week. These are my top choices for this weekend and the week beyond, plus everything new streaming below. It’s a great week for comedy, as Steve Carell returns to serial TV, and we’ve got documentaries and reality shows as well.
This Week on HBO Max: PCMag’s Picks
Fackham Hall (March 6)
If shows like Downton Abbey and Bridgerton really rustle your jimmies, 2025 parody Fackham Hall might be for you. This period comedy set in England in the 1930s stars Ben Radcliffe as a thief who swindles his way into a hall boy position at posh Fackham Hall, only to hook up with the daughter of the house and finagle his way into a position of privilege. Packed with gags, this is a fun way to spend an afternoon.
Rooster (March 8)
New comedy series Rooster has a strong pedigree, as co-creator Bill Lawrence also made Ted Lasso, Scrubs, and Shrinking, among others. Steve Carell stars as Greg Russo, a prolific writer of consistently selling but poorly reviewed airport fiction who takes a guest lecturer position at the liberal arts college where his daughter teaches. It looks like a clever and fun peek into the world of modern academia.
Fukushima: A Nuclear Nightmare (March 10)
The March 2011 earthquake that hit off the northeast coast of Japan would have been damaging enough on its own. But when the tsunami generated by the shock destabilized the cooling systems of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the potential for disaster became exponentially greater. This new documentary dives into the Japanese government’s response to the disaster, as well as how the Fukushima area has reacted in the 15 years since.
