Just like Rome, One Piece was not done in a day (except for the one who went fishing) and this is all the more true regarding season 2 of the Netflix live adaptation. If you read our review, you know that we appreciated the effort and the general good spirit. However, certain elements make us cringe. We propose to come back to the good and bad sides of the showmore precisely, including in relation to the story as it is carried out by Eiichirō Oda’s manga from which he takes liberties here and there. Necessarily, if you haven’t yet taken a look at the 8 episodes of this season 2, stop there.

They will find the One Piece
Before starting hostilities, it is worth remembering one thing: every change made by the series was carefully validated, or at least not invalidated, by Oda who supervises from afar, just so you don’t talk too much about your baby.
Therefore, it is therefore relevant to see the series know thatshe will never tell the story in its entirety – even in manga, we begin to doubt it – and make some shortcuts in the form of winks to the fans. From the first episode, we enjoyed seeing Bartolomeowhose presence in Logue Town we learned about much later in the original work.

Not only does the show manage to integrate the character into the plot, in a rather active role, but without making him so predominant that his absence is noticed in the sequel. And that’s good, there’s little chance that the series will last until the arc (re)featuring him. Same story for the silhouette seen behind Dragonimmediately recognizable to any One Piece fan.
Sanji’s mother, a Luffy reminiscent of Dadan… the series had fun slipping in numerous elements of lore, such as preparations-payments which would have had nothing to envy of Oda’s narration. At this stage it is difficult to say whether One Piece will take future liberties to explain these same elements on a tighter timeline, thus justifying its “adaptation” status. Or will it let them float in the air of a universe to which we will never have all the keys, but which will remain a successful gateway?

In any case, we can congratulate this season 2 for managing to bring together five plot arcs in only eight episodesproof that there is a desire to go as far as possible with these Mugiwaras of flesh and blood. We can even wonder if season 3 will ultimately focus only on Alabasta, or if it will only take half a season before tackling another piece?
The series One Piece has always shone through its desire for dedication to its adaptation. This is felt by the desire not to miss the great awaited moments. Yes, there are shortcuts, but the showrunners would never have dared to touch Chopper’s flashback which preserves the slightest particle of emotion put into the paper format. On the contrary, we can say that the show adds a range of feelings to the margins, particularly through the relationships between the characters throughout this season 2. Relations between the crew have never been so “real”.
They are going to do Domi Reversi
However, you should not shipwreck once you reach cruising speed. Especially at the level of these same feelings. Oda said: there will never be a romantic relationship between crew members in his manga. The showrunners said it at the time: there will never be a romantic relationship between members of the crew in the series. Except that Sanji’s seductive temperament here tends to flirt dangerously with the feeling of love for his navigator.

Exchanges of glances, words, intentions… the cook has always taken great care of the feminine gender with a little prince charming side, but we have the unpleasant feeling that the show is playing with the line. We feel that Nami’s illness is the opportunity to create the start of a story between the two, where she absolutely does not have the same relationship with the other Nakamas and Sanji has almost no interaction with Vivi.
Nami is the character who was most upset by the live adaptation. She is more combative (and a fighter), less fearful, she reacts less violently to the stupidities caused by her comrades… In the manga, Nami’s anger scares all the Mugiwaras. Here, Emily Rudd’s acting is smoother, less extravagant. It almost lacks the “One Piece madness”.

We already said it in our review, but paradoxically, too much loyalty can also be a hindranceat least for those who are not familiar with Oda’s universe. In live adaptation, there is a lot of things that ring false, in the costumes, the sets, the facial expressions of certain actors… So many elements that could be reduced, or even erased, without affecting the characterization of the character.
We know that this may contradict what we said about Nami above, but because we have the feeling that it is a lack in her personality and her relationship with others, where we could adhere to a Nami without a red wig. There is a difference between playing a character and being like them. This is only our responsibility. Besides, Iñaki Godoy is perhaps the one who sometimes does too much of one, and not enough of the other, alternately.

Here are some dark points of this season 2 of One Piece which can dampen our enthusiasm. Nevertheless, this will never be enough to diminish our desire to see the series go far with as much heart and passion as ever.. We nitpick because we know she can do better, but we remain fans.
