Insta360 has introduced the X4 Quick Reader, a £40/$40 512GB SSD that connects directly to compatible cameras to streamline the capture, storage, and transfer of footage during shooting sessions.

The X4 Quick Reader targets action camera users who often handle large video files, particularly in high-resolution formats like 5.7K 360-degree footage, where traditional microSD workflows can slow down production and transfer times.

Unlike standard external drives, the device attaches directly to supported Insta360 cameras, allowing footage to be written directly to the SSD rather than relying on removable memory cards or subsequent file transfers.

The drive delivers read and write speeds of up to 420MB/s, placing it in the range of entry-level portable SSDs while offering enough bandwidth to handle high-bitrate video recording without bottlenecks during continuous shooting.

This direct storage approach reflects a broader shift in content creation workflows, where reducing steps between capture and editing has become increasingly important for creators working on tight turnaround schedules or shooting on location.

Design and compatibility

Insta360 has focused on portability, with the Quick Reader weighing just 5.4 grams and measuring under 30mm in length, making it small enough to remain attached to a camera without significantly affecting handling or balance.

The device uses a USB-C interface with USB 3.2 Gen 1 support, enabling compatibility across Android, iOS, and desktop platforms while maintaining consistent transfer speeds when connected to phones, tablets, or computers.

Users can also connect the SSD directly to a smartphone to access and manage footage without needing Wi-Fi transfers or intermediary steps, ideal for the mobile-first editing workflows increasingly used by creators.

The Quick Reader also supports several Insta360 models, including the X5, X4 Air, and Ace Pro 2, indicating a focus on newer camera systems while leaving the door open for expanded compatibility through future firmware updates.

Unlike many rugged storage accessories aimed at outdoor shooting, the Quick Reader itself is not waterproof, though Insta360 recommends pairing it with compatible all-weather camera covers to maintain reliability in harsh environments.

Similarly, prolonged recording sessions can cause cameras to heat up when writing directly to external storage, which reflects the trade-offs of integrating high-speed storage into compact action setups.
