When it comes to Linux, many people still think of black screens, blinking cursors and commands that look like they were accidentally dropped on the keyboard. The reality looks different today: tidy desktops, graphical installation wizards and software centers that are reminiscent of app stores.

The c’t webinar takes beginners and those switching to a tour through today’s Linux. Keywan Tonekaboni, editor in the operating systems and security department, shows in a practical way what happens between the first desktop impression, installation and moving your own data from Windows – and where it’s worth taking a closer look.
Pretty desktops and safe testing
At the beginning you will get to know different desktop interfaces such as KDE Plasma, Gnome and Cinnamon – because with Linux you can choose what your own desktop should look like. The speaker then shows how to prepare and start a Linux live system on a USB stick. With a live system like this, you can test Linux at your leisure without touching a single file on your hard drive. At the same time, check whether your hardware is working. Typical pitfalls in dual-boot configurations with Windows – such as BitLocker, which often shoots sideways – are discussed, as is the actual initial installation.
Overcome terminal anxiety
Using Linux Mint as an example, Keywan Tonekaboni demonstrates how to install software using graphical software management, what alternatives there are to the usual Windows programs for office work and image editing, and how drivers and updates work. The first steps in the terminal are also on the program – but don’t worry: the console doesn’t bite. After the webinar at the latest, you will notice that a few lines typed sometimes lead to your goal faster than any click menu. You will also learn how to properly prepare a data migration from Windows so that nothing is lost during the move.
After the webinar you will know which distributions are suitable for getting started, where Linux gets its software, how package sources and Flatpak work together and what you should pay attention to when buying hardware.
For the curious, those willing to change and those returning
