Arxiv, an open archive where researchers publish scientific articles before formal review, is tightening its rules regarding AI-generated contributions that contain obvious errors and hallucinations. Scientists who submit texts with clear traces of so-called “AI slop” can now be excluded from the platform for one year. Tom Dietterich, head of the IT department at Arvix, announced this on X.
Duty of care breached
According to Arxiv, “AI slop” includes, among other things:
- hallucinated sources,
- incorrect literature references or
- AI comments accidentally left standing.
According to the platform, such errors show that the authors have not sufficiently checked the AI’s outputs.
