Steam Deck: Valve increases prices significantly

Now the Steam Deck is also affected: After Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony have already increased the prices for their game consoles several times, Valve is now increasing the price of its Steam Deck OLED. The handheld PC now costs 780 instead of 570 euros in the version with 512 GB of storage space; the version with 1 terabyte costs 920 instead of the previous 680 euros. The Steam Deck has been sold out for weeks.

Valve justifies the price increase in a post on Steam with rising storage and storage costs as well as global logistical burdens that affect the entire industry. Both models are available again after a phase of interrupted availability. “The Steam Deck itself has not changed,” the statement says. “We will inform you if anything changes in this situation,” Valve reassures customers. Same thing, just at a higher price.

Stronger increase in US dollars

The increase is even more significant in US dollars than in euros. The 512GB model climbs from $550 to $790, a $240 premium. The 1 TB variant increases from $650 to $950, an increase of $300, both before taxes. The fact that the increase in dollars is proportionately larger is due to the originally lower US prices: the 1 TB version cost more in Europe from the start than in the USA.

If you don’t want to buy at the new price, you can still find refurbished Steam Deck OLED devices at Valve: The 1 TB model is offered used for $760. The original LCD variant of the Steam Deck is no longer officially sold new.

Storage crisis claims victims

The price increase also dampens hopes for an early and, above all, affordable release of Valve’s Steam Machine and Steam Frame. Valve has not yet announced prices for either device – scarce and expensive memory components make calculation difficult. How expensive the new devices will ultimately be is even more difficult to estimate after the price increases for the Steam Deck.

Tariffs, impaired supply chains and the storage crisis are also affecting other hardware manufacturers: Sony recently announced the third price increase for the Playstation 5 since its market launch in autumn 2020. For a normal Playstation 5, Sony recommends a price of 650 euros – a hundred euros more than before and 150 euros more than at the start of sales. In May 2025, Microsoft has already added 50 euros to the recommended price of Xbox Series X and Series S. Nintendo is raising the price of the Switch 2 from 470 to 500 euros in September.
