After the double tap and snappy wrist flip, Apple is introducing a new control gesture for the Apple Watch. This new gesture involves a single tap of the thumb and index finger, and concerns widget management. With this new feature, Apple is progressing a little further in terms ofaccessibility.
Control gestures on Apple Watch: particularly appreciated features
In 2023, Apple introduced double tapping on the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. By performing a simple double tap of the thumb and index finger, the user could play or pause media, answer phone calls, or even navigate the smart stack. Last year, Apple introduced a new gesture: a flick of the wrist. This movement simply allows what is on the screen to disappear to return to the dial of the connected watch.
Quickly, these two gestures won over many Apple Watch users thanks to their practicality. A user receives a call on their watch, but their hand is busy? A simple double tap of the index finger and thumb unlocks the call. As a reminder, these two gestures can be personalized in the watch settings. And good news, Apple will soon offer a new control gesture.
A new gesture to control the Apple Watch
After the double tap and the quick turn of the wrist, Apple will offer, via watchOS 27, a new control gesture, namely the act of tap once with index finger and thumb. On its blog, Apple states: “ Tap your index finger and thumb together once to select a widget in Smart Scrolling and quickly see what you’re interested in — even if your other hand is busy ».
Unlike double tapping, this new gesture therefore involves a single tap of the thumb and index finger. It allows you to select and open a widget. For now, this new control gesture is only available via the beta version of watchOS 27. This will be available to all users this fall, during the deployment of watchOS 27. However, you will need to have a relatively recent Apple Watch (Series 9, Series 10, Ultra 2 and higher models) to be able to benefit from it.
