For many office workers, video meetings have long been part of everyday working life. Modern laptops now have integrated microphones and webcams as standard, which is sufficient for many areas of use. Nevertheless, there are good reasons for an external camera. A study published in the journal Nature examined how poor video quality affects the perception of conversation partners. The result: Static or blurry images led the test subjects to evaluate their counterpart more negatively – even if the intelligibility of the conversation did not suffer from the restrictions. After a choppy video meeting, the participants had less confidence in the professional skills and wanted to change their contact persons more often.

The researchers attribute this effect to the discomfort that technical disruptions can cause in people. Something similar is also known from dealing with robots. And in fact: Many of the study participants said they felt uncomfortable due to choppy sound or frozen images. In the worst case, this can lead to other candidates being given preference in an application process or a sales conversation failing because potential customers switch to the competition. An external webcam is therefore particularly worthwhile if your laptop’s integrated camera does not offer sufficient quality or if you need additional functions for streaming and presentations.
Insta360 Link 2: Professional webcam with AI functions
The standard bundle of the Insta360 Link 2 combines webcam and microphone in one device and is aimed specifically at demanding home office users. The model records in 4K with HDR and offers high image quality even in low light conditions. Instead of the usual background blur, the camera delivers a professional bokeh effect that creates a pleasant, soft atmosphere. AI noise cancellation also filters out unwanted background noise, ensuring clearer communication.
A central feature of the Insta 360 Link 2 is the integrated 2-axis gimbal: the camera physically pans and tilts to follow movements in space and always keep the person or group filming in the picture. In addition, the camera can be controlled remotely using a smartphone or hand gestures, for example to activate AI tracking and zoom in or out. The webcam is therefore particularly suitable for streamers, content creators and anyone who gives dynamic presentations or meetings and wants to move freely in the room.
The model offers specialized modes for different areas of application. In Deskview mode, for example, the camera films the desk, which is practical for analogue presentations or demonstrations. In whiteboard mode, the software automatically recognizes the whiteboard so presenters can speak and point at the presentation at the same time. In addition, the Link 2 can be combined with other Insta360 cameras to offer different perspectives during presentations, for example. The model is available in black and white. The regular price is 229.99 euros, it is currently available on Amazon for 172 euros.
Two cheaper models for everyday use
For everyday home office use, it doesn’t necessarily have to be an expensive professional model. The Logitech Brio 100 also offers a combination of camera and microphone and records videos in full HD resolution at 1080p. According to the manufacturer, automatic light compensation increases brightness by up to 50 percent, reduces shadows and thus ensures better image display. An integrated webcam cover protects your privacy when the camera is not in use. The model is available in black, white and pink and is currently reduced by 30 percent to 34.99 euros.
An even cheaper alternative is the Emeet Full HD webcam, which is specially designed for HD quality video calls and delivers sharp 1080p videos with clear colors. Thanks to its 90-degree field of view, it is also suitable for larger conference rooms. Two integrated microphones with noise cancellation filter out annoying background noise. A built-in cover protects the camera when not in use. The price for the HD webcam is currently reduced from 29.99 to 23.99 euros.
