Smart is preparing a return to basics with new #2. Scheduled for the Paris Motor Show, the mini electric city car will have a range of 300 km in cute packaging taken from the concept presented in April.

You said Smart sold his soul to the devil? Considering their latest electric anvils, your intuition is absolutely correct. #1, #3 and #5 are particularly interesting models, but are completely opposite to the philosophy promoted by the brand. Fortunately, a return to basics is looming with the upcoming arrival of #2, a true city car descending from the illustrious Fortwo.

From concept to series: what will this new Smart really look like?

Presented in Milan in April, Concept #2 foreshadowed the news #2which should take up the main points. Given the sassy look of the style study, we would even like #2 to adopt the entire design identically! Unfortunately for us, the production version will calm things down, with parts that are necessarily more industrializable. The leather straps and the complex patterns of the grille are thus to be forgotten.

An overall simplified look to control costs

Same story regarding the illuminated pixels in the scoops on either side of the bumper, which will give way to traditional plastic parts. The main LED lights will also follow a simplified design, while the gold parts flanked on the body of the concept will not be continued. The rims will also suffer an occasional purge while the rear lights will lose their uniqueness.

A technical sheet tailor-made for the city

The bumper also seems to have been remodeled with a larger gap between the tailgate and the shield to meet safety standards, logically unknown to the concept. The interior has not been revealed, although we have already discovered it in sketch form. Smart is finalizing the development of #2 with the latest dynamic tests allowing the final adjustments to the chassis, steering and suspensions.

Small but strong: 300 km of autonomy and express charging

The technical sheet of Smart #2 remains unknown to this day. However, we know that the car will have an electric motor on its rear axle, making it propulsion with a small turning radius. Its battery will have a capacity of 35.7 kWh and will offer a range of around 300 kmwhich is more than sufficient for this type of vehicle. Fast charging will also be offered, with 10 to 80% requiring around 20 minutes.

Faced with competition: a fight that already promises to be close

Smart #2 will face a plethora of competitors. The Fiat 500e will certainly be the most formidable of them, playing the trendy card with added practicality with its four seats. The Renault Twingo will also have its say while the new Dacia Spring expected for September will once again rely on its slashed prices. See you at the Paris Motor Show in October to discover Smart #2!
