Regulatory authority for audiovisual and digital communication, Arcom has decided to grant Amazon an extension of the amendment to the agreement for its Prime Video service. This is an additional delay in discussions between the platform and the French film industry on the media timeline.
Foreign streaming platforms like Prime Video are subject to the same financing obligations for French creation as traditional television channels, linking their investment to their place in the film broadcast schedule.
What is the financial stake of this agreement?
The agreement under discussion sets investment levels for the period 2026-2028. Prime Video would commit to investing at least 90 million euros in European and French creation.
This amount could rise to 110 million euros if the platform obtained the right to exploit at least one cinematographic work less than 12 months after its theatrical release.
Why was this extension necessary?
Initially, the amendment adopted by Arcom in May 2026 provided for termination if no agreement was reached with the professional cinema organizations by July 31, 2026.
Faced with the lack of consensus as this deadline approaches, Amazon requested an extension to prevent negotiations from becoming obsolete.
” We continue to seek an agreement that would improve our position in the media timeline. Discussions are continuing, and we are hopeful that they will result in a solution in the coming months “, an Amazon spokesperson told AFP. The new deadline is set for December 31, 2026.
