A Bold New Chapter in Apple’s iPhone Lineup

It looks like Apple’s 2025 iPhone lineup is about to shake things up in a big way with their rumoured iPhone 17 Air.

While nothing has been confirmed officially, leaks and rumours have already revealed a lot about the new slim iPhone. If they turn out to be true, then Apple could be gearing up to launch one of the slimmest and boldest iPhone of all time.

The iPhone 17 Air could very well be the final name Apple has chosen for its upcoming slim device, as the “Air” branding already aligns with its lineup of lightweight, stylish, and thin MacBooks and iPads. The name feels justified too as multiple leaks suggest that not only will it be the slimmest in the iPhone 17 series, but possibly the slimmest iPhone ever made. That’s a big deal, considering the current record is held by the iPhone 6, which came in at just 6.9mm. The iPhone 17 Air is rumored to take it a step further, trimming things down to a jaw-dropping 5.5mm. That’s insanely thin for a modern smartphone, especially one expected to pack serious power under the hood.

One concern with the slim form factor that comes up is the return of “Bendgate” which was one the biggest issue with the iPhone 6, where its ultra-thin build led to the phone bending over time. If Apple is pushing the boundaries even further, it’ll be interesting to see what structural and built changes they’ve added to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself.

We’ve already seen some dummy units that showcase the full design of the new iPhone 17 Air, highlighting its slim form factor along with a refreshed rear design.

Apple seems to be making one of its best choices yet with the screen size of the iPhone 17 Air. The device is rumored to sport a 6.6-inch OLED display and is expected to come with 120Hz ProMotion for those ultra-smooth visuals. If the base iPhone 17 moves to a 6.3-inch screen (as rumored), this Air model could hit the sweet spot for users who want a larger display without going full Max.

Under the hood, the iPhone 17 Air is tipped to run on the new and improved A19 chip, likely built on TSMC’s improved 3nm process. Additionally, we could see one of the biggest hardware upgrades with Apple’s new in-house 5G modem. The battery capacity details are still under wraps, but leaks suggest support for 35W wired charging and MagSafe wireless charging, so topping up should be faster than ever.

On the camera side, the rear is expected to house a single 48MP sensor, reportedly the same one used on the iPhone 16 Pro. This means we could very well get some of the best flagship-grade shots on the iPhone 17 Air. However, this also means that we won’t be getting an ultrawide lens for those expansive shots, nor a telephoto lens for clear, lossless zoom. This could be a downside, as an ultrawide lens has become a necessity for capturing beautiful and wide-scene shots in today’s smartphones.

On the front, Apple is rumored to be upgrading the selfie cam across the board to 24MP, which would be a big step up for FaceTime fans and social content creators.

In the new dummy units, we’ve already seen housing for an Action Button and a new Camera Control button. While not officially confirmed yet, these flagship-grade features are expected to make it to the Air model as well. Additionally, there will be support for Apple Intelligence and an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.

The pricing still remains under wraps, but according to some early reports, it was rumored that the iPhone 17 Air would be the most expensive model in the lineup. However, fresh leaks suggest that it might actually be priced between the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro. If that’s true, we’re looking at a price somewhere around $899, which could translate to approximately Rs. 89,990 in India. This would make the Air model a very compelling option for those wanting premium hardware without the Pro Max price tag.
