After The Last of Us, HBO tackles the Baldur’s Gate phenomenon

New game… same player. Three years after the launch of The Last of UsHBO entrusts the adaptation of another video game monument to Craig Mazin. The father of Chernobyl working on a series inspired by Baldur’s Gate III. The showrunner and producer wants “extend the story” of the title released in 2023 on consoles. Literally extend since the series will take place directly after the events of the game developed by Larian Studios. It will be about exploring the consequences of this story… with known characters and others new.

Located in the world of Dungeons and Dragons — more precisely in a medieval fantasy universe called Forgotten Realms — Baldur’s Gate III follows a protagonist captured by Mind Flayers, evil creatures who insert a parasite into their victims. Craig Mazin is quite familiar with this universe. He prides himself on having spent more than 1000 hours exploring these video game lands. “It’s a dream come true to be able to continue the story created by Larian and Wizards of the Coast”. He adds:

“I’m a huge fan of D&D and the brilliant adaptation made by Swen Vincke and her talented team. I can’t wait to help bring this to life Baldur’s Gate and all of its exceptional characters with all possible respect and passion, and I am deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this important license.”

More freedom?

Unlike his experience on The Last of UsCraig Mazin will have real room for maneuver here to adapt the universe of Baldur’s Gate III. Since his series is not linked to any sequel project on consoles, he will be able to explore new horizons and make the journey last as long as necessary. While the adaptation of Neil Druckmann’s games must respect a straightjacket, that of the story of two titles, the series Baldur’s Gate III is fertile ground to give free rein to your imagination.

For the moment, we do not know who will carry this adaptation in live action. Craig Mazin even announces that he has approached the game’s voice actors to offer them a role. He had already done this on The Last of Us since Merle Dandridge had taken over the role of Marlene for the series. The actors who played Ellie and Joel in the Naughty Dog title also made an appearance in the series, opposite Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.
