AI Safety Institutes rebrand to focus on scientific measurements – UKTN

An international coalition of AI Safety Institutes coordinated by the UK is rebranding itself to reflect its focus on measurement and evaluation of AI models.

The International Network of AI Safety Institutes, which includes Australia, Canada, the EU, France, Japan, Kenya, South Korea, Singapore, the UK and the US, will transition to the International Network for Advanced AI Measurement Evaluation and Science.

The change indicates the group’s priority to ensure the science of AI measurement and evaluation can continue to keep pace with the technology’s development.

As part of the rebrand, the UK will take on a network coordinator role, which will see it shape efforts to improve approaches to the scientific measurement of AI.

“Trust in AI isn’t optional – it’s critical. That’s what the work of the Network and our new role as its co-ordinator will help drive,” said the UK’s AI Minister Kanishka Narayan.

“By uniting nations on evaluation and research, we’ll lead from the front, shape the future and unlock AI’s benefits for everyone.”

The network was established in November 2024 following the UK-hosted AI Safety Summit.

The UK’s own institute rebranded itself in February from the AI Safety Institute to the AI Security Institute, signalling its focus on national security.

“Advanced AI systems are being developed and deployed globally, so our approach to evaluating them has to be global too. That is why this Network is so important,” said Adam Beaumont, interim director of the AI Security Institute.

“Our focus will be on supporting partners to develop rigorous, practical ways of testing advanced AI.”
