Amazon Prime Video Pauses AI Video Recaps Following Plot Line Errors

Prime Video’s new AI-powered video recaps are off to a rough start. After fans flagged multiple plot-point errors, Amazon appears to have pulled the feature temporarily.

Prime Video began testing Video Recaps last month, and it uses Amazon’s own AI to generate video summaries of previous seasons. These recaps don’t just put together a string of clips from earlier episodes. Instead, they identify key plot points, give them an AI-powered narration, and add actual dialogue and synchronized music to deliver a “theatrical-quality visual recap.”

However, as first noticed by fans and reported by GamesRadar+, the feature appears to generate inaccurate summaries. For example, in the AI recap added to Fallout Season 2, Cooper Howard’s flashback scenes are said to be set in 1950 when they were actually set in 2077. Additionally, the Ghouls’ offer to Lucy in the season’s climax to join hands has been misrepresented as a “join or die” ultimatum.

While announcing the feature last month, Amazon said Video Recaps would be available for English-language Original shows, such as Bosch, Fallout, The Rig, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan, and Upload. However, following reports of these plot-point mess-ups, the streamer seems to have paused the feature for now, The Verge reports.

Amazon didn’t immediately respond to PCMag’s request for comment. Earlier this month, the e-commerce giant faced similar issues with its AI-powered English dubbing for anime. Fans and dubbing artists complained about the poor dubs for Banana Fish, and the streamer had to pause that feature as well.

AI summaries have a history of poor starts. Google’s AI Overviews, its new Discover headlines, and iPhone’s notification summaries are some of the many examples.
