Rumors suggest that iOS 18, the next version of the iPhone operating system, will arrive with a lot of new features related to the artificial intelligence (AI). Now, it doesn’t seem to be very clear which language models Apple will use.
A little over two months ago it emerged that the Cupertino company was negotiating with Google to boost some of its products with Gemini’s underlying technology. This is because their own AI models would take time to be ready.
Artificial intelligence, Apple, Google and OpenAI
Yes, Apple has been working with algorithms for years to bring concepts like computational photography to life, but the surprise boom of AI with chatbots like ChatGPT would have become a problem. The solution? Lean on your rivals.
When everything seemed to indicate that iOS 18 would arrive with Google elements in its entries, Mark Gurman has arrived with unexpected news: Apple is in talks with OpenAI to boost some of the new AI features of iOS 18.
Added to all this is the information that the iPhone manufacturer has stepped on the accelerator and its internal advances on AI seem to be giving good results. Without going any further, this week Apple researchers launched a family of four large models.
Anonymous sources point out that Apple and OpenAI had already been talking earlier this year, but that they are again evaluating a possible agreement. They also say that Apple has not made a final decision on which models it will use.
So we could see an iOS 18 with technology-driven features Google or Apple. In any case, everything seems to indicate that certain internal system modules will definitely work with the models that Apple has developed internally.
All this is presented approximately a month and a half before WWDC 2024, a developer conference where the new version of iOS should appear, a version that is presented as one of the most important in the company’s history.
