  5. Dropbox — The most diverse set of features and integrations. Sign up for an annual 2TB plan for $9.99 per month.

Facts & Expert Analysis About Digital Media Cloud Storage Platforms

  • Scalable storage options: Digital media tends to eat up cloud storage, so look for services with multiple high-capacity storage plans that can scale in line with your business growth.
  • Understanding encryption: Client-side encryption, also known as zero-knowledge encryption, gives you full control over the encryption of your data, which means optimal privacy for your files.
  • Backup tools: Look for cloud storage services that allow you to automatically back up files from your desktop, eliminating the need to upload them manually.

Try pCloud with 10GB of free storage.

Backing up digital files is an absolute must for everyone from photographers and filmmakers to social media creators and graphic designers. It’s equally as important to use a service that makes accessing, sharing and reviewing files simple. To help you find the right home for your data, I’m sharing the best cloud storage for digital media professionals.

You’ll recognize some of the services from our selection of the best cloud storage providers. However, I’ve fine-tuned this selection to highlight the leading options for digital asset management, as well as some honorable mentions.

Cloudwards’ Choice: pCloud

Cloudwards’ Choice: pCloud

Dan Ginn is a Cloudwards expert in cloud storage, as well as a travel photographer.

I chose pCloud as the best option for digital media professionals due to its best-in-class media player, which also makes it the best cloud storage for video. It’s great for digital assets, such as designs, images and audio files. Having client-side encryption is the biggest draw for me, though. I can rest easy knowing my digital assets are fully private and protected from prying eyes.

Before I dive deeper into each cloud storage provider, check out the simple side-by-side comparison below to help you understand what’s available.

Lab Data & Hands-On Testing

Our team tests all cloud storage services for upload and download speeds, stability and overall pressure placed on the CPU. We run tests twice on a 1 Gbps internet connection and calculate the average.

Data from the chart as a table
pCloud 13.58
Google Drive 14.10
MEGA 15.08
Sync.com 21.43
Dropbox 14.40

Google Drive and Dropbox lead the way in the speed category. Don’t discount pCloud and MEGA, though. They’re slower on paper, but you’ll hardly notice a difference during real-world use. Sync.com, on the other hand, is noticeably slower — potentially even too slow for those working with large video files.

Security & Privacy Analysis

**Advanced plan only

These five services feature all the bells and whistles, such as two-factor authentication (2FA) and security measures that can prevent man-in-the-middle attacks. All except Google Drive offer client-side encryption as well, which ensures no one can view your files — even the storage provider itself.

MEGA does use slightly outdated encryption protocols, but they’re still strong enough to keep your data safe.

Collaboration & Features Overview

Although all of these services have collaboration capabilities to some extent, Google Drive and Dropbox lead the way in terms of power and functionality. The downside is that they’re the least private options on this list, so consider what’s most important to you before choosing a service.

Get started with pCloud’s 10GB free storage.

Pros:

  • Superb native media player
  • Zero-knowledge encryption
  • Lifetime storage plans

Cons:

  • Zero-knowledge encryption costs extra
  • No integrated creative productivity tools

pCloud sits at the top of my ranking due its excellent digital media features. From the dedicated photos tab to the digital audio tools, the platform should be of particular interest to anyone working with multimedia files.

pcloud videos

pCloud’s user interface (UI) lets you quickly access different media file types.

What Makes pCloud Special?

Having tested other cloud storage services, I can confirm that few are as committed to digital media management and consumption as pCloud. You can watch videos in full quality, create playlists for audio and even make light edits to images, with the latter functionality landing it among the best cloud storage for photos.

You can also run automated backups via the desktop and mobile apps, and access offline files when you don’t have an internet connection.

Users can leave comments on videos and collaborate with their team.

When to Choose pCloud

If you’re working with a range of digital assets and need a decent chunk of storage, then pCloud is a good option. You can get up to 10TB of storage, with no file size limits for uploads. If you don’t like paying for a monthly subscription, pCloud offers very affordable lifetime plans for a one-time fee.

What Makes Google Drive Special?

Google Drive excels in productivity and real-time collaboration. Pros:

  • Lots of free cloud storage space
  • Generous storage plans
  • Client-side encryption
  • Native communication tools

Cons:

  • File transfer limits
  • No document-related tools

MEGA has a long-standing reputation for privacy-focused cloud storage, offering client-side encryption for all of your digital content. As with the other services on this list, file versioning is available as well, which lets you jump back in time to retrieve edited or deleted media files.

mega user interface

MEGA offers a dedicated section for digital media files.

What Makes MEGA Special?

MEGA stands out as the best free cloud storage service. It offers 20GB just for signing up, and an extra 20GB is available if you use the mobile and desktop apps (10GB per app).

For solo digital media professionals or teams that don’t need video storage, that free storage could be an excellent way to save money, depending on how much cloud storage space you need.

mega slideshow

MEGA has a slideshow tool to help you go through files.

When to Choose MEGA

MEGA’s free plan is a great choice if you don’t have the budget for cloud storage. However, it’s still a good option even if you can afford a paid plan. Tools like the slideshow are a great way to present your work, and the integrated chat helps you discuss work with internal teammates and external clients alike. If you don’t need many productivity tools, MEGA is a solid option.

Sync.com has made several improvements to its UI.

What Makes Sync.com Special?

Add in zero-knowledge encryption on all plans (including the free plan), and you’ll quickly understand that this is the best option for those working with sensitive digital media.

Security measures can be as simple or advanced as you need.

When to Choose Sync.com

I recommend using Sync.com if you need advanced security features at an affordable price. The platform is especially useful for creating workflows and hierarchies between teams. The platform integrates with many other apps, including Slack, Google Workspace and Microsoft Office, while also offering a native whiteboard and document creator.

dropbox user interface

Dropbox has all the tools you could need to build an online creative workspace.

What Makes Dropbox Special?

Dropbox is perhaps the most diverse option on this list when considering native and third-party apps. Its own creative app, Replay, is a video editor’s dream. You can leave timestamped comments, obtain live approvals and easily share files with others.

dropbox replay

Replay is one of several creative apps integrated into Dropbox.

When to Choose Dropbox

Creative agencies should certainly consider Dropbox for their digital media management. Its familiarity makes sharing files with clients much easier, and the sheer number of productivity tools available caters to creatives.

It’s pricier than other services — costing $9.99 per month annually for 2TB — but the depth of apps, fast upload speeds and cross-platform functionality justify the price. Learn more in our Dropbox review.

Honorable Mentions

You can’t go wrong with any of the five options covered above. However, to ensure you don’t leave empty-handed, I’ll go over three honorable mentions also worth considering.

Jottacloud: Jottacloud appeals to heavy use cases, especially anyone working with high-quality video. It offers unlimited cloud storage space at an excellent price. Backup tools are available, as is support for backing up a network-attached storage (NAS) device.

Internxt: The perk of Internxt is its elite security protocols that protect you from future quantum-based computing attacks. In simple terms, your files couldn’t be any safer. Internxt also has super cheap lifetime plans.

OneDrive: OneDrive is the best option for those who are already in the Microsoft ecosystem. It integrates with Microsoft Office and offers the option to bundle in Designer for creative digital media.

Methodology: Testing Framework & How You Choose

To help you better understand how I arrived at my selection of cloud storage platforms for digital media, I break down my testing criteria below.

Storage Space & Pricing

The best place to start is by analyzing how much storage space is up for grabs and whether it’s worth the asking price.

  • Why this matters: For multimedia, you ideally want high storage capacity without breaking the bank.
  • How we test: Our team analyzes the market average for cloud storage to find the best bang for your buck.
  • What to look for: Look for free storage, unlimited storage and lifetime plans available for a one-time payment.

Security & Privacy

I read each provider’s security and privacy policies to learn how they manage and secure your data.

  • Why this matters: It’s important to prevent anyone from gaining access to your data for nefarious purposes.
  • How we test: I tried out the apps, analyzed the platforms’ privacy policies and put the encryption methods to the test.
  • What to look for: Keep an eye out for industry-standard AES 256-bit encryption, client-side encryption and transparency about how companies process your data (i.e., whether they sell it to third parties).
Sync Speed & Performance

Our team tests sync speed (how fast you can get files into the cloud) and performance from Dublin, Ireland.

  • Why this matters: Fast speeds allow for more fluid workflows, and strong performance lets you run other programs during uploads and downloads.
  • How we test: We upload and download a 5GB folder of mixed files on a 1 Gbps internet connection.
  • What to look for: Look for low to midrange CPU usage, and average upload and download times of 7 to 8 minutes (or faster) per 5GB.
Collaboration Features

In the cloud storage space, collaboration tools allow you to communicate with your team on specific pieces of work.

  • Why this matters: The best tools help you maintain a fluid workflow, especially in a remote environment.
  • How we test: We test all methods of communication, including comments, integrated messaging and productivity tools.
  • What to look for: Key features include a dedicated inbox, the ability to tag other team members, and productivity integrations for asynchronous and synchronous collaboration.

Final Thoughts

With that, I bring my selection of the best cloud storage for your digital media files to a close. If you’re relying on me as your key decision-maker, then look no further than pCloud, especially if you predominantly work with images and video. For the best value, consider signing up for a pCloud lifetime plan. Pay only once and enjoy an exclusive Cloudwards discount.

On the other hand, remote teams reliant on Google Docs and similar apps will do well with Google Drive or Sync.com, while MEGA and Dropbox will appeal to users looking for free storage or generous app integration.

Which service will you choose? What’s most important to you in a cloud storage provider? Which other options do you like for digital media management? Let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading.

  • Yes, Dropbox is popular among professional photographers due its familiarity, which makes it easy to share images with clients.

  • Depending on your industry, you may want to opt for a more privacy-focused solution such as pCloud or Sync.com. Both are good choices for solo professionals, teams and businesses.

  • It’s a good idea to store video files with a trusted cloud storage provider. pCloud is great for its excellent security, solid media playback and affordable lifetime plans.
