Canonical launches an academy to officially certify in Ubuntu

Canonical has taken advantage of its Ubuntu Summit 25.10 virtual event to announce Canonical Academya initiative to be able to issue official certifications and courses related to Ubuntu Linux. It is, therefore, a new platform that will allow both professionals and companies to validate their open source skills with qualifications designed and promoted by the engineering team behind the development and maintenance of Ubuntu.

The company already has a certification “pathway” available in it, for system administrators (SysAdmin). It will be made up of four exams, although at the moment it only shows details of three, and only one of the modules that comprise it is open and available to the public, the one corresponding to the use of the Linux terminal (Using Linux Terminal 2024).

The other two modules, Using Ubuntu Desktop 2024 and Using Ubuntu Server 2024, are still available in trial for the Canonical community to try out. There is a fourth module, Managing Complex Systems 2024, which is still in preparation.

To obtain the SysAdmin certification with Ubuntu it will be necessary to pass the four exams in the itinerary modules. Each exam will last between 60 and 90 minutes, and will be based on the available Canonical syllabuses.

Canonical will base all module content on Ubuntu version 24.04 until the next LTS (Long Term Support) version of the distribution arrives in two years, 26.04. Then the content and questions of the exams will change depending on the new features it incorporates.

The name of the exam and certification modules will also change, since 2024 will be replaced by 2026. In addition, it will change successively as new stable versions of Ubuntu appear in the future. This will serve to show how recent the certification obtained is in each case.

The icertification schedulewhich as we have seen It is modularallows those who want to obtain the official SysAdmin certification with Ubuntu get a digital badge if you pass the four exams of the modules that comprise it. With it you will be able to show employers and colleagues your skills and capacity in relation to Ubuntu. For now Canonical has not reported prices for certifications or exams.
